I have known Mark for many years. He was a great pilot and was always happy to share his wealth of experience. Mark never met a stranger and he loved everything related to aviation. I will forever remember his kindness and his friendship. My heartfelt condolences to the Wallis family.

Dear Wallis family. Please accept my most sincere condolences. I work at AC and though I never had a chance to fly with Mark I spent a week with him in class at CAE. He truly defined the phrase a "gentleman and a scholar". Not only was he a ray of sunshine every morning he was one of the most thorough professionals I've come across in this industry. Mark was simply one of a kind and a winner in the hearts and minds of everyone who had the privilege and pleasure of meeting and knowing him. He was not only a good man, but a great one in so many ways. His zest for life, positive attitude, genuine interest and concern for others and his community, his immeasurable and lasting love for his family, will endure. I intend and will make a concerted and more dedicated effort to take a page from his book and continue to "pay it forward" and do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Because that was the essence of Mark - he lived every single day of his life with integrity, honesty, curiosity, adventure and passion. And don't forget his winning smile! He was one of the finest people from one of the best families I know. I know Mark is flying high above watching over and guiding his family with everlasting love. Mark was not only a very competent pilot, but the finest of a gentleman to fly and spend time with. He often spoke of his lovely wife and kids whom he had loved very much indeed. It was great to have a Canadian friend in Holland at the start of our time at Martinair. Mark and I flew together on a regular basis and became good friends. Never a dull moment with Mr. Sparky. We called him Sammy because his eyebrows grew together at the top. He looked like Sammy in Cheers. He had the gift of the gab and was super positive. Our wives, Elizabeth and Mariette also became friends. it was a good time. Mark went back to Toronto and eventually Air Canada. I stayed on at Martinair. During a rare visit to Toronto I was able to come for a visit in Milton one evening. So glad I did. It was good to talk, hear what was going on and see Mark, Elizabeth and the girls. Even then he was upbeat and positive. Thank you for the good times, thanks for being a great friend.

I have fond memories growing up watching my 2 brothers with Mark and Alan. Heck, they even let me join in some hockey games at the school rink. Hello Elizabeth and 'the girls' I am so sad to hear about Mark. I met Mark at Martin Street Public School, I think he was on his 3rd year as co-chair. He recruited me for Spring Fling and for the next 4 years we worked together on Spring Fling, school council and the 'save the school' campaign. This was only one of 3 school councils he was involved in. I would say the man had endless energy but I think he was driven more by his love for his family. I alway enjoyed running into Mark, he was easy going and always had a smile. I know from the stories he shared he has give you all lots of great memories to cherish and carry with you. Elizabeth, I was so sorry to hear of Mark's death. Christina told me this morning. It's because of Mark that I've been to Paris twice. When he took the job in Holland and you so generously invited Christina to visit and stay with you, there was a 4 day side trip to Paris. I sat for hours listening to Christina tell about that trip when she got home. In 2000 she and I made our first pilgrimage and in 2005 we went back again with her dad and Mike. Without knowing it Mark has given me many happy memories. After reading about his life in Milton I can only imagine how much he'll be missed by the community and of course you and your daughters. Mark flew a cycle or two with me as a First Officer, A319/320/321 Air Canada, shortly prior to his own promotion to Captain, just a few short years prior to my retirement. He put things in perspective for me I met Mark when he joined CAE as a part time Sim instructor. I remember him coming into my office with his big bright cheery smile and my first impression was “WOW what an upbeat guy”. While we chatted about nothing in particular he eventually shared his battle with cancer. I thought to myself “he is going to beat this” and he truly believed he would, so did most of us. His positive attitude made me realize each time he would drop in that my problems were small and how much I had to be thankful for. Throughout the next while Mark dropped in occasionally to visit, again always with his big warm smile and a funny joke or story to tell. His struggle continued but he never complained….. Mark, although I knew you only a short while, your bravery and fight for life are nothing short of heroic. Somewhere up in that big blue sky the angels have been blessed and I bet right now are whispering “WOW what an upbeat guy!”… You will be missed ...Carol

Dear Elizabeth, girls, Frank and Betty, Al and Nancy. I'm so sorry for your loss, words cannot do justice to what a special guy Mark was, not many people are like him. I remember lying on my front lawn with Mark at age 8 and him pointing out every type of plane that would fly over. I remember in his basement all his birds and the aviaries outside, and of course his and Al's love of the beatles when we were kids, introducing me to them. Mark also was one of the best hockey players at the rink growing up, and played with the same all out effort up until the last couple years when he had to hang them up with the Slime Dogs. Who can forget his head first dive to stop an opposing player from cutting towards our net, Mark's momentum carrying him past our net into the boards, hitting the boards exactly where the gate was, with such force that Mark ended up completely outside of the rink. Then he of course got up like nothing happened at all, and continued the game. Mark put the same effort into everything. I'm going to miss that big smile and sincere care and love he showed towards me my whole life, and towards everyone he encountered. Love you buddy.

I had the pleasure of sharing a flight with Mark on the "Diesel" 3 for many a pleasant flight but the one that stands out if a flight from Kuujjuaq on Ungava Bay to Val D'or on 27 November 1985. We were returning empty after delivering a huge satellite dish and it had already been a long day. As many of you will know, navigation aids are few and far between in this part of the world and we were navigating from weak NDB to NBD. Mark was flying back and the long leg to the first NDB had worked out pretty well, so I was feeling more comfortable. Naturally, this seemed like a good time to catch up on my sleep! So I drifted off in never-never land for a while. When I woke up something didn't seem right. According to the time of night and the position of the moon in the windshield, we seemed to be heading in the wrong direction! No worries, it was a bright moonlit night and we should be able to easily find our position. Since we were in uncontrolled airspace anyways, I suggested we descend below the thin cloud layer and start looking for lakes. Well, if you have ever flown in Northern Quebec you will know that there are a million lakes and they all look the same, so this didn't work at all! My next bright idea was to climb as high as possible and try to contact Montreal Centre. This finally worked and we were able to get a vector for Val D'Or. They must of asked us ten times if we had enough fuel to make Val D'Or since we were so far off course. Finally, I asked the controller how far we were off course when we were first radar identified and he said we were 113 miles south of the course! I said this must be a new record and he said sadly, no, not by a long shot! We laughed many times over the years about this most memorable flight. I will really miss Mark as I'm sure you all will too...

Dear Mrs. Elizabeth, Allison, Mackenzie and Melanie. I am so sorry that you lost your father and husband. I am sure that Mr. Mark has made friends with everyone in Heaven by now. He is probably flying a plane up there and he will always be watching over you. Emily :)
